Every year behind the Worlds is a star team of creative people who help craft every decision, including making the Worlds Anthem music video – a story and itself. Such a person Carrie Right, Marketing and Creative Director, Riot Games. For the record Carrie talks about the choices behind the song, the words and the video, as well as what the worlds mean to her.
Another year, another world, and another world of music. What has influenced the soundtrack, lyrics and story behind this year’s “Burn It All Down” PVRIS?
For Worlds 2021, we are really based on this concept of “make / break”. It’s the global dilemma that makes the competition so exciting; For every stunning victory, there is a crushing loss. To create the future, you need to be willing to take a break from the past. We take to heart the stories we tell and the way we choose to tell them.
For the World Anthem song, we wanted to tell the story of a person who doesn’t think they have a “hero” in his stereotypical box that looks or acts or thinks examine precedents and is excluded or limited to examining what expectations are. And then follow our hero when they rise up against this society – he finds his strength and stops trying to adapt to the old system. Instead he prefers to “burn it all” and create a better world. It is a difficult journey, not without wounds and sweat and tears, but in the end it is joyful and victorious and It’s worth it.
The sound of the Worlds Anthem came from the heart of that story. It is the epitome of “breaking the past to create the future.” It starts with a leg firmly planted in the past; Those thoughtful piano tunes are deliberately created to stimulate former anthems. We wanted the fans to think they knew where this song was going. Then, when we hit that chorus and our hero decides to “burn it all”, we leave the past behind. We enter the explosive, energetic, modern chorus that cannot be contained.
We are going into the second decade of the world. The biggest curse of success is the fear of innovation. But at LOL Sport, innovation is always in our DNA. So this music serves as a promise; We will always be willing to break the past to create the future.
Tell us a little more about the songs, music video visuals and how the artist was chosen.
As soon as the initial nugget of song concept was formed, PVRIS was a constant reference to our team. He was our musician when we explored both the song and the sonic landscape. In voice, we needed someone who could channel both mental weakness and explosive energy. He was the whole package. And that’s certainly meant, because when we arrived, he was very enthusiastic about the project. The energy was uninterrupted as soon as our team entered the studio. There was genuine passion for songs and stories. It was a perfect partnership.
Music video visuals are another, very important part of this whole coin. Again, it all started with “make / break”. I’ve seen the landscape of LOL Esport worldwide, and I’ve seen a game on the edge. Our first decade is over, and the second decade is waiting to be written. Some of our biggest names, retired and a new generation, were so hungry to make their mark. And I knew that we had to tell that visual story in the music video.
So we created the “Make / Break Society” – an underground society with secret clubhouses in different parts of the world. A metaphor for the true rising generation of our sport – they have shown how they are constantly being crushed, pushed, tested, tested, working to develop our game into a new era. All so that they can break the past and create their future.
What is the power of Worlds to bring gamers around the world together? Why is it so significant?
The world is not Just Gather gamers from all over the world. It’s a cultural moment that makes everyone realize that gaming is much bigger than a game. It breaks boundaries – living in the expressions of sports, music, fashion and entertainment. Worlds is this uncontrollable power that does not fit in a box; That’s what makes it so horribly exciting. Any day, you never know what will happen next.
And of course the pinnacle of the Worlds competition. These professionals from all walks of life with all kinds of personalities and stories come together in the moment in the highest team. You never know who will rise, or who will fall; Who will make, or who will break. The only guarantee is that the five icons are going to rise before our eyes in real time, cementing their place in history.
This year, Spotify and LOL have combined to create a new digital experience that penetrates more deeply into new world music videos, expanding the stories around featured professionals, creatives and musicians. What can fans wait for?
The world we created for the music video was too rich to express in just 3:20 film. We had an unprecedented number of professionals in the film, this custom-designed regional clubhouse and a deep story. It literally didn’t fit all. So we’ve partnered with Spotify to create a rich digital experience where fans can enter and explore that world.
In the Spotify Digital Experience, you can explore LEC, LCK, and LPL clubhouses – diving into hero professionals, original stories and all the fun Easter eggs. You can follow our music creation process, including quotes and behind-the-scenes videos with PVRIS, our lyricist and our composer. And of course there is the extraordinary secrecy of the process of designing artwork and characters, clubhouses and battle scenes.
Which is your favorite part of the Worlds Tournament? How should fans tune in?
Is my favorite part of the world a “police-out” called “what’s happening right now”? The Worlds are therefore compelling because the format is constantly changing as the tournament progresses. It’s a story of rapid development, each offering something different. That is what I will say. . . Tax No. Miss the final. We have planned some amazing surprises.
