Although each sampling case is different, we checked-in with three experts who have extensive experience collecting some of the best practices and advice on how to clean samples from successful experience.
Do: Keep detailed notes in the studio on what samples are being taken.
Even before the process of clearing a sample begins, make sure you are clear about what the sample is and where. In terms of upfront costs, sampling is often not cheap if you work with a major label and publisher.

Jensen insists that artists who get a lawyer should get an experienced music-business attorney to look into the contracts. Do: Realize that the sample comes with a clearance limit.

Don’t: Try to clear a sample at the last minute.
It often takes time to find the source of a sample, especially if it is extracted from SoundCloud or YouTube. Even if you can find the person who owns the copyright to the song, they can’t provide a sample right now due to lengthy financial negotiations. Also, it takes time to secure the necessary permissions and paperwork. Kuge “recommends allowing at least a few months to do this. You can’t do that overnight.”
Don’t: If you are unable to clear a sample, skip the song.
Sometimes even after hours of searching and digging, the source of the sample remains elusive. In that case, it’s best not to disclose, because you’re exposing yourself to financial and legal reactions. “Once the album is out, you have absolutely no leverage,” Cuge said. “You’re basically at the mercy of the person you sampled illegally, whether it’s an accident or not.
