Our editorial team creates thousands of playlists, and lots of listeners engage with playlists for specific moments of their day – for example, when they work, study or cook dinner. But we know that everyone tastes different, and the songs that one person may want to sing in the shower are not understandable to everyone else. (We’re sure you can relate.) That’s why we’ve tweaked our playlist ecosystem to enable every listener to find the perfect song for every moment. Here’s how it all works.

Some playlists will now be personalized for each listener based on their particular tastes. This means that for specific playlists, neither will be the same.

So what does this mean for artists and their team? First, all music has a good chance of coming in front of the right audience. When we tested this new system with some of our listeners, we found that they were much more likely to listen. Also, these personalized editorial playlists increase the number of artists appearing in the playlist by 30% and the number of listeners to the song is discovered by 35%.

We’ve seen that after discovering a song via a personalized editorial playlist, the number of listeners who find tracks on their own to listen to repetitions has increased by 80%. In fact, the average number of times a listener saves a track is 66%, which is good news for all artists.

And there’s more: when a song is added to one of these playlists, it doesn’t necessarily appear in the individual version of each listener in that playlist. That’s why, from today, we’ll create unique links to these playlists for artists to share via Spotify for Artists and Spotify Analytics. Anyone who clicks on a unique link shared by an artist will see the personalized version of the playlist with the artist’s track as the first song. (For non-personalized editorial playlists, artists should use public links as they are now.)

When songs are added to one of these playlists, an email notification is sent to the artists and their team so they can share the good news with fans.
