Marvel Studios’ Eterns opens in theaters this Friday, November 5, and features a new set of characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Oscar®-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao directs this new direction in MCU storytelling. Speaking about the film, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, said in an interview with D23, “In a world after the Infinity Saga, we wanted to take a bold new step and say,” You still don’t know everything about the universe. There are 10 spectacular heroes you haven’t met who have been here the whole time. ”
Here are some things you need to know about the Eternals and their MCU corner:
]The Eternals are a group of ancient immortal beings who work on behalf of the Celestials, who are giant beings who are the architects of life itself. The Eternals have protected the Earth from the dawn of man.
]Their main enemy is called the Deviants, and they are a race of alien predators. For centuries, it was thought that they had all been destroyed after being defeated by the Eternals.
]The characters were created by legendary comic book writer and artist Jack Kirby, who is also a Disney legend, and first appeared in “The Eternals” # 1, which hit the shelves in July 1976.
]Following the facts of Avengers: Infinity War i End of the game, the sudden reappearance of all those people 5 years after their disappearance (also known as “The Blip”) created enough cosmic energy to awaken the Deviants.
]Therefore, the Eternals, who went their separate ways and forged their own lives, must come together to face the renewed threat of their ancient enemies.
]Although they had the power to confront various tyrants and villains of the past in MCU history, such as Thanos, the Celestials forbade them to intervene in human wars and conflicts, unless it was caused by the Deviants.
]The Eternals have names that resemble gods or other characters from various mythologies. Legends say they were the originals and were confused with otherwise inspired gods or mythical characters.
]The matriarch and spiritual leader of the group is Ajak, who was originally a male comic book character. In the film Ajak is now played by actress Salma Hayek, and is the only Eternal with the ability to communicate telepathically directly with the Celestials. Cosmic energy pulses through Ajak, giving him the power to heal his eternal companions, as well as animals and humans.
]Thena, played by Angelina Jolie, can create weapons with cosmic energy that are transformed at will during the battle, turning her into a fierce fighter. However, he also struggles with PTSD from previous battles, and this sometimes affects his mental state.
]Ikaris, played by Richard Madden, is also a leader of the Eternals, and originally presents himself as the group’s moral compass. After the Deviants reappear, he embarks on a mission to reunite the team. His powers include incredible strength, the power to fly and he can project rays of cosmic energy from his eyes. If this sounds like a certain DC superhero, well, the movie briefly deals with that.
]Reliable and affectionate, Sersi (played by Gemma Chan) has the power of transmuting matter, meaning she can change the composition of any insensitive material she touches. She has had an intermittent relationship with Ikaris for over a thousand years, but when we first meet her in the film, she works as a curator at the Natural History Museum in London and has a close relationship with a human named Dane. Whitman (played by Kit Harrington).
]While others have remained in the shadows since the Eternals broke up, Kingo (played by Kumail Nanjiani) chose to become a Bollywood movie star. He is almost always accompanied by his best friend Karun (Haris Patel), and Kingo’s power is the ability to create powerful explosions of cosmic energy from his hands.
]A fierce warrior, Gilgamesh (played by Don Lee) gains incredible strength in battle as he summons a golden, cosmic-enhanced exoskeleton to protect his arms and fists. He is Thena’s best friend in the Eternals. In comics, he is known as “the Forgotten”, because he spends most of his life with humanity, and is believed to be the basis of the Greek mythological figure Hercules.
]Makkari is another Eternal who has become a woman on the MCU, and is played by deaf actress Lauren Ridloff, making her the first deaf superhero on the MCU. Makkari harnesses cosmic energy to make her the fastest woman in the universe. Not only does it run fast, it does everything fast.
]Each group of heroes has a person of technology, and in the Eternals, i.e. Phastos (played by Bryan Henry Tyree). She is one of the smartest people in the universe, a technopath (she has the ability to understand technology naturally) and is a master inventor. He also controls the starship of the Eternals, the Dome. In recent years, she leads a quiet life with her husband Ben and son.
]Sprite (played by Lia McHugh) looks like a 12-year-old girl, but has the temperament of an irritable old woman in a child’s body, which is understandable as she is 7,000 years old. Sprite has the power to make herself and others invisible, as well as the ability to make real illusions. Sprite is another genre-changing version of the comic book character.
]The Eternal main finale of this film is Druig (played by Barry Keoghan). He has the powerful ability to control other people’s minds using his cosmic energy, which has made him intense and withdrawn. In the film, he is also very close to Makkari.
]Remember Dane Whitman, mentioned earlier with Sersi? In the film he presents himself as a human co-worker and a loving interest, but comic book fans recognize the name as one of the people holding the title of Marvel Black Knight hero. Are we meeting a future supporting character with Dane, or is the name a coincidence? I find it hard to believe that Marvel will use the name with no future plans for the character.
]Although not much is known about the Celestials before this film, this is not their first appearance on the MCU. The first Guardians of the Galaxy (GOTG) actually featured two Celestials. Eson the Seeker is seen briefly in a vision of the past, with the Stone of Power. In this same film, Knowhere’s spaceport and mining colony is actually the severed head of another ancient celestial being.
]But perhaps MCU’s best-known Celestial to date is Ego, the Living Planet, from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Played by Disney legend Kurt Russell, Ego is the father of Peter Quill. This makes Star-Lord half heavenly, so he was able to handle the effects of the Stone of Power by touching his bare hands at the end of the first. GOTG, and why the Ego wanted to harness Quill’s power for his own use GOTGv2.
Marvel Studios’ Eterns is the 25th MCU movie, and I hope you see it with an open mind to meet new characters instead of expectations of what you think should be a Marvel movie.
Don’t forget to wait until the end … my sources tell me that the film has two final credit scenes.
