Find a community away from home during Native American Heritage Month

Victoria Powell, a senior analyst at Consumer Insights at Disneyland Resort, has a new sense of confidence when it comes to her perspective as a Native American since she adopted the key to inclusion at Disney, and a new sense of community as a member of NAATV.

“I always thought it was an obligation to make sure that if something happened, to discuss it, but with the inclusion key I can raise my hand more proactively and safely, knowing that everyone is on the same page,” he said. dir Victoria, member. of the Apple tribe. “Before, I was ready to argue for inclusion before talking about my own perspective. With the key to inclusion there, I have the confidence of the company that supports me from the beginning of a conversation.”

Victoria has also found an improved sense of community since joining NAATV (Native Americans & Allies Together with Vision), a resource group for company-wide business employees. BERGs are made up of cast members who have a passion for creating and supporting a place where we all belong, regardless of our background, experiences or identities.

“My tribe is in Northern California,” he explained. “And finding a native community in a new city takes time. When the NAATV BERG came to fruition, I suddenly found a whole community. With more than 500 federally recognized tribes, it’s important to make connections and learn from each other. “

Victoria especially enjoys NAATV’s monthly speaking circles. “It is very open and welcoming; we bring everything to these conversations, “he explained.” I walk away from this Zoom call and feel more energized on the other side. I am proud of our community and excited to celebrate the greater inclusion that comes from our events. ”

As with all The Walt Disney Company BERGs, these groups are open to everyone, whether you identify as part of this community or an ally.

“NAATV stands for Native Americans & Allies Together with Vision and this really demonstrates the importance of the alliance; it’s very important to have allies because we’re a smaller population, ”Victoria shared, adding that joining the BERG is a great way to learn about local indigenous lands and honor the cultures and contributions of communities and Native American and American tribes.

“We strive to honor my own culture every month of the year, but during Native American Heritage Month I have a dedicated space to share it with others. For many, Native American Heritage Month is its first exposure to modern native communities, ”Victoria said. “Honoring Disney this month creates new connections and alliances, which we can continue to foster far beyond November.”
