ABC’s “20/20” special to air “West Side Story” on December 5, 2021


This Sunday, December 5, the ABC News program “20/20” will take a special look at the upcoming reimagining of “West Side Story” which will be released in theaters on December 10, 2021.

Something’s Coming: West Side Story – A special 20/20 edition”Features a new interview with legendary director Steven Spielberg that reflects on his fascination with the original recording of the Broadway cast of“ West Side Story ”as he grew up and how he helped inspire his film career.

He also talks about his hesitation to make a musical so far, the relevance of the film’s themes in today’s world and how he is adapting the iconic musical for the next generation.

He’s not the only one we’ll hear during the hour.

Stephen Sondheim, the legendary lyricist who wrote the lyrics for the original Broadway musical, will play the music for the film in an interview granted just before his death earlier this month.

West Side Story - 2021 - Rita Moreno

Iconic actress Rita Moreno talks about her Oscar-winning role as Anita in the original 1961 film and her role in the new film that was written especially for her. Moreno, one of three Academy®, Emmy®, GRAMMY®, Tony® and Peabody Award-winning artists, is also one of the film’s executive producers.

Also interviewed are the stars of the upcoming film, Ansel Elgort, Rachel Zegler and Ariana DeBose (who also recently presented ABC’s “The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration”), as well as Chita Rivera, who starring for the first time in the role of Anita on Broadway, Tony Kushner, winner of the Tony Award, who wrote the screenplay, Cindy Tolan, casting director of the film to select emerging stars for iconic roles, and Puerto Rican historians who consulted the film.

This special episode of “20/20” will air at 7pm ET.


The 2021 film premieres through Disney’s 20th Century Studios arm and tells the classic story of fierce rivalries and young love in New York City in 1957.

It stars Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (Mary); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chinese); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); and Rita Moreno (as Valentina, the owner of the corner store where Tony works).
