NEWS: CDC advises Americans to avoid traveling to Canada

As COVID-19 cases increase worldwide due to the Omicron variant, the world continues to struggle with international travel guidelines.

While some experts argue that travel bans are not effective in curbing the spread of Omicron, other countries such as Hong Kong have banned international travel from 8 different countries, including the US. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has now made one new recommendation for US travelers – to one of our nearest neighboring countries.

As reported by Reuters, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of State have advised Americans to avoid traveling to Canada as COVID-19 cases spread. This comes after the United States relaxed border restrictions for travelers from Canada and Mexico in November.

Canada is now classified as “Level Four: Very High” by the CDC It is not recommended to travel there at this time. There are currently 80 destinations worldwide also ranked at level four. The CDC recommends that anyone visiting a level three destination be fully vaccinated.

Reuters reported that Canada has broken its record for COVID-19 patients hospitalized this month. A spokeswoman for Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said: “We are aware of the latest CDC advice” and added that in December Ottawa had encouraged Canadian residents to avoid non-essential travel.
