Skill development: Initiating self-care

New year, new great things on the way! Being part of the STAR program means constantly learning new skills, growing individually and growing as a team. Our first skill development call this month was with the topic of self care, led by টিAmyPenistone from the community team. Part of Amy Heart and Soul Ambassador, A mental health initiative on Spotify to normalize conversations about mental health.

It is very important to take good care of yourself, just when your bad days are not going away, every day! With Amy’s help, we went on to learn how to identify and deal with stress. Amy presents us with a self-care framework with five components that help us connect with ourselves and provide concrete tips for putting it into practice.

We asked a few celebrities what they took from the first skills development call and here’s what they said:

Billy-J: “Self-care is important and it’s something everyone should do every day – not when times are hard. “

They: “Self-care doesn’t have to be a big / great gesture every day, it can be something small, like: walking after a long day.”

That was: “I’m glad we had a call about this after being through a bit of a rough patch. Something I’m definitely going to try is to practice self-care every day and not focus on it all at once. “

The main thing to remember about self-care is that it is essential daily maintenance, not something like that when you are overwhelmed. Also, make sure your ‘stress bucket’ doesn’t overflow! If we can manage and understand our own unique helpful and helpless coping strategies, it will be easier for us to identify what is happening in this situation and what we need. Last but not least, with these five ‘wellness ways’ you can build your self-care structure: connect, be active, take notice, learn and give.

If you need some prompts to help you reflect, you can ask yourself these questions depending on how you are feeling at the moment:

  • What is good in my life today?
  • Who am I grateful for today?
  • What went well today?
  • What makes me feel in control?
  • Am I pushing things that are out of my control?

This video Can give some insight on how to reframe helpless thoughts.

Coming back to work after the New Year, this call was properly scheduled. There is no better way to start a new year than to learn new things and take care of what you need!
