By Raquel Stecher

It’s that time of year again when movie lovers around the world wait in anticipation for the Oscars. Whether you love the Oscars or simply tolerate them, chances are you’ll be tuning into the ceremony just to see what all the fuss is about.

This year, there are some true gems to celebrate. Jane Campion is the first ever female director to be nominated twice for Best Director. Her stunning film The Power of the Dog has garnered a whopping 12 nominations. Other celebrated nominees include remakes of classic films like West Side Story and Nightmare Alley, crowd pleasers like CODA, Dune, Belfast, and tick, tick… BOOM !, beloved women-driven stories like The Eyes of Tammy Faye, The Lost Daughter, and Spencer, and celebrated arthouse films like The Tragedy of MacBeth and Licorice Pizza. And don’t sleep on the other categories. The Worst Person in the World and Drive My Car are two of the top favorites to win Best International Feature Film and Flee has made waves grabbing nominations in three very different categories: Best Documentary, Best International, and Best Animated Feature.

With every Academy Award ceremony comes new milestones and memories. This year’s Oscars are sure to be different with three new hosts (Wanda Sykes, Regina Hall, and Amy Schumer) following a few host-less years. Also, not all 23 categories will be televised live, a change that has led to much outrage online. One constant for every ceremony will always be acceptance speeches. They can range from outrageous, to heartfelt, to boring and to downright cringey. Whether you love these speeches or not, you have to admit they always shape the overall experience of the ceremony.
